Is Your NGO Meeting A Real Community Need?

From Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, human action is motivated by 5 basic needs placed in a pyramidal format: Physiological needs, safety needs, belongingness needs, self esteem needs and self-actualization. The first 4 needs are collectively called deficiency needs (D-needs) and the last one is referred to as Growth or Being needs (B-needs). D-needs arise due to deprivation while B-needs arise due to desire. The motivation to fulfill D-needs grows stronger the longer they are unmet. Most successful NGOs often address D-needs. Which of these needs are you tackling?

Physiological Needs

Self-actualization needs realizing personal potential, self-fulfillment, seeking personal  growth and peak experiences. A desire to become everything one is capable of becoming
Esteem needs Maslow classified into two categories: (i) esteem for oneself (dignity, achievement, mastery, independence) and (ii) the desire for reputation or respect from others
belongingness needs after physiological and safety needs have been fulfilled, the third level of human needs is social and involves feelings of belongingness.
Safety Needs

Once physiological needs are met, one’s attention turns to safety and security in order to be free from the threat of physical and emotional harm. eg Living in a safe area Medical insurance, Job security, Financial reserves

Physiological needs These are biological requirements for human survival, e.g. air, food, drink, shelter, clothing, warmth, sex, sleep

Creation Of NGOs

1
STATING THE NGO IDEA, MISSION & VISION STATEMENTS The first step in NGO creation is to identify socio-economic problem that lies outside the boundaries of government and business, then developing an appropriate Vision & Mission statement that can convince people to join your cause
2
DECIDING ON TYPE & STRUCTURE The next step is to decide the type of NGO: charitable NGO, Service NGO, Participatory NGO or Empowering NGO. Then decide on the coverage: community based, city-wide, National or International. Sometimes an NGO can carry on with the production of goods/services
3
CARRYING ON TECHNICAL ANALYSIS NGOs like many other organizations require the identification of a real community need, carrying out a socio-economic impact assessment, technical arrangements / partnerships, developing a budget and carrying on fund raising

Planning involves defining a goal and determining the most effective course of action needed to reach that goal. Typically, planning involves flexibility, as the planner must coordinate with all levels of management and leadership in the organization. Are you planning with flexibility in mind? do your plans ensure optimum use of resources? if not, you may be doing something not quite right.

organizational structure is the foundation of a company; without this structure, the day-to-day
operation of the business becomes difficult and unsuccessful.

Strategic Management

Strategic management is a set of managerial decisions and actions that determines the long run performance of a corporation. It includes environmental scanning (both external and internal), strategy formulation (strategic or long-range planning), strategy implementation, and evaluation and control.

Project Management Most a times funding organizations have their own standards for approving NGO projects for possible sponsoring. As such an unexperienced project manager may over look some of these requirements. Are your projects getting rejected by funding bodies ? in that case you may be missing out on some critical elements that an NGO report must have.
Partnership Arrangements

An NGO cannot achieve its vision for a better society on its own. Community needs are too numerous and society’s problems are too complex. Your NGO needs to work with other NGOs and your government to accomplish your goals.
Through partnerships with other NGOs, and the public sector, you gain access to new resources, including
funding and in-kind support as well as
information, expertise and skills.

Marketing for NGOs

As it is in business so is it with NGOs, marketing is essential for reaching the financial goals. When properly done marketing can bring open doors to your NGO such as collaboration with international NGOs, Reaching new funders, international recognition, Formation of advocacy coalitions and building profitable relationship with the local & national Government
